Circa late 19th century, Victorian Era.
Beautifully decorated Handpainted porcelain brooch, depicting African Violets.
Unmarked by maker or for metal content, but back of porcelain plate is marked “26”. Most likely gold filled, as was much of the jewelry during this era, and there are some present solder marks. Brooch has a C-clasp, also indicative of the Victorian Era.
Needle also sticks out further than the brooch itself.
With their love of attaching meaning to flowers, Victorians regarded violets as a symbol for modesty and fidelity, due to the plant’s habit of holding its flowers in a low, nodding, deferential manner. Would make a perfect gift!
Wear as a brooch or as a pendant (just add a chain)! Bail swivels to the direction you want and can also be tucked underneath, when wearing as a brooch.
Brooch measures approximately 2.25 inches long (not including bail) by 1.75 inches wide. Weighs approximately 19.10 grams.
In good condition with no noticeable flaws. There may be some minor wear/tarnish, as expected with age & wear. Please see all photos.
