Circa 1870s, Victorian Era. This striking antique Victorian mourning locket is carved from glossy Whitby Jet, a lightweight fossilized material prized for its deep black sheen. Set with silver tone fittings, it opens to reveal two internal compartments. It was worn as both personal adornment and a deeply symbolic act of remembrance.
No visible maker's marks. Each side of interior of locket is stamped "TSTPATENT".
Locket measures approximately 1.55 inches long (including bail) by 1.1 inches wide. Weighs approximately 13.32 grams.
In very good antique condition. Minor surface wear consistent with age. Jet has no noticeable chips or cracks. Opens and closes securely. Please see all photos.
