The Workmen’s Benefit Fund of the United States of America was incorporated in 1884 and licensed to do an insurance business in February 1899. The Society was originally incorporated as Workmen's Sick and Death Benefit Fund of the United States of America; the present name was adopted in 1939. Industrial sickness funds were among the first providers of health benefits in the United States. They were popular with workers because medical care was not very beneficial at the time. Progressives in the early 20th century urged states to provide government sickness benefits, including a small death benefit for burial expenses.
