Circa 1920s-1930s, Art Deco. An original pair of bronze bookends by Judd Manufacturing Co. of New Britain, Connecticut, catalog no. 9698, depicting a Native American hunter with his loyal dog. The design is traditionally identified as “The Last of the Mohicans”, inspired by James Fenimore Cooper’s classic 1826 novel. These bookends feature detailed figural relief with a rich bronze finish and darker patination to highlight the textured background and figures. Each bookend is stamped “SOLID BRONZE”.
Judd was one of America’s most important producers of decorative hardware and bronze bookends, and this subject is among their more sought-after literary and historical themes.
Each bookend measures approximately 5.1 inches tall by 3.5 inches wide, and have a depth of approximately 2.25 inches. Combined weight of approximately 3lbs, 5oz. Both bookends have been lined with felt at the base to prevent surface scratching.
