Framed Antique 1883 Original Tiffany & Co. Invitation Opening Ceremonies New York Brooklyn Bridge May 24 1883 Signed 16x12”

Rare original piece of NYC & Brooklyn history! Engraved invitation to the opening ceremonies of the Brooklyn Bridge. New York: Tiffany & Co., 1883.

Illustrated with an image of the Brooklyn Bridge and the seals of the City of New York and the City of Brooklyn.

Completed in elegant manuscript with the name of recipient, Mr. Charles Lewis. When examined closely, the ink in the handwritten portion of the invitation appears to have a reddish hue, indicative of its age & authenticity.

In the late 1800s, both industrially-made iron gall Blue-Black inks and alanine-dye inks were available for dip pens. As a result of the iron used to make the ink, most iron gall inks are susceptible to corrosion. The ink in the paper rusts the same way any metal would when it is exposed to changes in temperature and humidity.

Visible portion of invitation measures approximately 8.25 inches long by 6.25 inches wide.

Frame measures approximately 16.1 inches long by 12.1 inches wide. Back of frame is affixed with wire for wall hanging. Front of frame has glass cover.

Sticker on back of frame reads “ART & Picture Framing BE 8 3210, 7810 3rd AVE BROOKLYN NY”.

There are also two newspaper clippings about the Brooklyn Bridge adhered to the back of the frame, one dating 1983, the centennial of its opening.

Frame is in good condition with no noticeable flaws, apart from possible minor wear, as expected with age.
