Engraving depicts “Bust of a Man in Profile. Study for Saint Joseph” by Andrea del Sarto (André del Sarte) (1487-1530).
Plate was originally engraved by Auguste Desperret (1804-1865) in 1853.
Please note that while this item is vintage, it is a “modern” reprint made with the 1853 engraving. I cannot date this item for sure but believe it was framed in the 1950s-1970s.
Bottom of engraving has a Musee du Louvre issued embossed seal, “MUSEE LOUVRE CHALCOGRAPHIE”.
Since 1797, the Chalcographie du Louvre has conserved and printed from a collection of several thousand engraved copperplates, with the prints destined for sale. Each plate is housed in the museum archives and is sent to the Louvre’s own print shop and given a run by master printers on museum-quality paper.
A chalcographie is the French term for a copper or metal plate engraving, where a sheet of metal is engraved or etched with a picture, inked and pressed to sheet of paper.
Frame measures approximately 12.45 inches tall by 12.6 inches wide, and has a depth of approximately 0.6 inch. Glass cover. Back of frame is affixed with wire for wall hanging.
In good condition. Please note that frame has some wear and areas of missing paint, as expected with age. Please see all photos.
